What to expect during your child's visit
Make your smile last a lifetime.
Oral health can be directly linked to overall health. Monitoring the health of your child’s mouth is crucial to a happy healthy childhood.
Why are routine dental exams & cleanings important for your kid?

Catch potential issues before they become major problems.
Comprehensive cleaning all of the debris, bacteria, and deposits that could result in periodontal issues (like gum disease).
How to prepare your
child for their first visit
We suggest you prepare your child the same way you would before their first haircut or trip to the shoe store. Your child’s reaction to his first visit to the dentist may surprise you!
Here are our favorite tips:
- Take your child for a “preview” of our office.
- Read books with them about going to the dentist.
- Review with them what the dentist will be doing at the time of the first visit.
- Speak positively about your own dental experiences.
What to expect at the first exam
It’s not as scary as it seems! We’ll make sure your child is comfortable and gently perform an exam.
- Examine their mouth, teeth and gums.
- Evaluate habits like thumb sucking.
- Check to see if they need fluoride.
- Teach them about cleaning teeth and gums.
- Suggest a schedule for regular dental visits.

What do you need to know about pediatric exams?
Your kid’s smile is unique – which is why we’ll take the time to build the best care path for them.
Every exam and cleaning could include: brushing, flossing, polishing, gentle plaque & tarter removal, and more! It depends on their unique smile.
Great question! At Legacy Family Dental we introduce your child to their first dental appointment starting at age three. Of course if there are any questions or concerns, we can schedule an exam sooner.
Daily brushing and flossing helps prevent plaque buildup, but there are some cavities that your floss and toothbrush can’t reach.
We recommend twice a year, depending on your child’s unique smile and needs.
Take a step towards a lifetime of great oral health.
