Questions &Answers

What do you need to know about porcelain crowns?

Your smile is unique – which is why we’ll take the time to build the best care path for you.

When are porcelain crowns needed?

Crowns are appropriate for correcting major damage from tooth wear, clenching and grinding, or fractures in teeth from expansion of silver fillings.

Are porcelain crowns painful?

They can actually help relieve pain! Many people have unexplained pain from filled back teeth, which is usually due to hairline cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows a return of full dental function for these teeth.

How many appointments will this take?

This will take two – one to clean the problem tooth. You will have a temporary crown while your custom crown is being made. The second appointment is to bond your new crown!

What can I expect during my porcelain crown visit?

We first remove decay or damage, shape your natural tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown of plastic. On the second visit we fit and adjust the final crown to bond it for a beautiful looking tooth.

Will I have to avoid certain foods after this treatment?

While you have the temporary crown it’s important to avoid eating sticky food (especially gum) and hard, crunchy foods. Continue to brush normally but floss very carefully!

How long will my crown last?

Porcelain crowns typically last between 10-15 years – a near permanent solution!

Are there other types of crowns available?

Depending what is best for you, we offer other types of crowns.
